I've always had a fascination with desert landscapes for their vast spaces of quietude and the pioneering sensation of 'journey' they bring about within. Where arriving at one place from another is not just a matter of boarding a plane but rather an exploration of skies, landscapes, climate, and surprises along the way. The destination itself seems truly irrelevant except for the odd tank of gas and another jug of fresh water. For this, I'd be happy to get lost in the Atacama all over again.

Once upon time a delightful Irish fellow by the name of Ian fell in love with a beautiful Argentine girl, Vero. They recently wed in an intimate fall ceremony with close friends & family at a lovely estancia just outside of the city. Baileys, Irish sweets, and even Gailic dancers made an appearance. Here are some candid snaps of their simple yet heart-warming day. These two will definitely be together for a lifetime.

Mullu is colorful Peruvian niche restaurant within the Buenos Aires gastronomy scene. A contemporary and innovative menu - created by Peruvian chef Jose Castro Mendivil - which not only includes Chifa and Nikkei dishes but also respects Chinese and Japanese influences.
Jose emphasized that color & abundance should be evident in every dish and that lime is part of all recipes. A special thanks to Chef Jose, his cool dog, Becky Hayes, Allie Lazar, and Sorrel Moseley Williams for their on-going collaboration on this project.

On the outskirts of a dead-end town in Southern Bolivia between drought, desert, and desolation lies a cemetery of trains. With the similar appeal to a Death Valley fashion shoot, I could have spent days here exhausting memory cards. Instead I had 15 minutes while my guide took a pee-break and chain-smoked in the front seat of his jeep. I still managed to exhaust 2 memory cards.

The apartment is a penthouse overlooking the beautiful Botanical Gardens in Buenos Aires and features custom furnishings, lighting, rugs, and other beautifully designed details. The Salar de Uyuni is the world's largest salt flat at 10,582 square kilometers and contains 50 to 70% of the world's lithium reserves. The clear skies and exceptional flatness of the surface make the Salar an ideal object for calibrating the altimeters of Earth observation satellites. As a photographer the experience of visiting the salar is like being inside an infinite studio with perfectly even light. The Saltire series is a tribute to the vastness and weightlessness one seems to feel here where gravity and distance need not exist. Trekking through the Atacama desert is a seemingly outer-planetary adventure of mythic proportions. At first I thought the world had simply ended and then I realized that if there were no tomorrow, this is what it might look like. With bone dry earth, little oxygen, high altitude, and a numb cheek full of coca leaves I spent 4 days in a dusty jeep trying to capture this stark fantasy world.

I recently paired up with talented Argentine Chef, Hernan Gipponi to capture his featured spring/summer 2012 menu at the Hernan Gipponi restaurant in Buenos Aires. Hernan's process clearly extends beyond the flavor & texture of the food that his clients enjoy. Setting up these photo sessions was a lot like watching a painter prepare his blank canvas and then creating art with food; a process well-worth appreciating.
People often say that artists are difficult to work with. I say those people need to put down their day-timers and start making some art.

Long before any food is served in any restaurant the hours of prep, grocery shopping, ingredient sourcing, meal planning, table setting, and straight-up grunt work is what really happens. Frances Ren & her Team Pong have this part mastered in their new Buenos Aires pop-up resto that's clearly Asian inspired. Arriving hours before the pop-up actually popped, I captured a little bit of the chaos & charisma that goes into this 1x weekly "must-do" dining experience.

Bite your tongues on this one animal-rights activists (aka white people in G20 countries north of the equator), but welcome to the Coliseo de Gallos (Coliseum of Cocks) in the desert province of Piura in Northern Peru. A place where Peruvian families from miles around bring their cocks to combat & proudly fight their brut birds over cash bets, flying feathers, and cheap beer. Though these events aren't for the faint at heart, they hold a special place in local culture, bringing together families, farmers, big men with birds, and a whole lot of buena onda ( believe it or not ). If your cock loses, well...buen provecho, at least you've got dinner sorted.

As a self-admitting non-foodie ( don't get me wrong I adore quality food - it's only the self-righteousness that goes along with buying $12 organic carrots thinking you're better than everyone else that I protest ) So, I'm a hard-sell for nouveau-gastronomy and fusion dining concepts. But, NOLA Buenos Aires was an exception to pretentious foodie venues and their menues. Instead, I found the atmosphere warm, the cajun food delicious and spicy, and the social dynamic totally candid. The hosts created a winner with this one. Congrats Liza, your business is already a success:)

I've always been a bit of a collecionista for all things in print - biz cards, stationary, foreign newspapers, vintage posters - you name it. I savour them like the pieces of art they ought to be. My favs are old travel postcards of the 1960's that showcased places like Rio and St. Tropez as untouchable fantasies to the common man. Today travelers go everywhere and they know what their destination will look like long before they arrive. So in this light the idea of de-glamorizing travel - revealing a place as one would really see it when walking down the street - is appealing and real. Street scenes are often the most vivid, the most sensory and surprising. Basically, where all the magic is at. I've started designing several postcard series' from my images of archives in this tone. Here's Mexico.

Along a bumpy cobbled street tucked in behind a coastline is La Vineria de Colonia; a lovely little wine shop & tasting room on the shores of Uruguay. Part stone loft, part secret garden, and part boutique, la Vineria is one of those places you'd almost walk right by only to go inside on a whim and spend the rest of your afternoon drooling over Tannats. If I was a two-eared Van Gogh I'd likely hang out at this place on sweaty summer nights and paint something, half-waiting for mandolins to start playing on the front step. It's picturesque, it's charming, and it has damn good wine.

he Street Art scene in Buenos Aires represents a colorful commentary on society and art and is embraced locally as a valuable part of the urban landscape. It spans across neighborhoods rich and poor and offers up an innovative and often collaborative spin on how we express ourselves in public space. In recent years it has been common for businesses to commission a piece of graffiti as a form of advertising and annual festivals inviting international artists are becoming more and more common. In a private tour with Buenos Aires' authority on street art, Graffitimundo, I was guided around to capture some of the city's most impressive pieces.

La Boca is Buenos Aires' original neighborhood and has retained an identity distinct from the rest of the city. Often referred to as La Republica de La Boca, some of the country's best futbol players have come from this area and if you're not wearing the blue and yellow jersey that represents their team, don't be surprised to get chased right out. Though many would say a trap for tourists, to me La Boca offers much more and each time I return I'm reminded of the subtle reasons that make this area of the city so unique.

A showdown of helado and hombres in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Hailing from Italian immigrants, it's no wonder that Portenos in Buenos Aires love their ice-cream. A series of wine labels inspired by photographs taken of street art in Buenos Aires and lunfardo.
I'm constantly out photographing street art in Buenos Aires, of which the calibre is amazing. I thought I should do something will all these photos so I started a project making wine labels out of the street art...which only made sense to pair it with the language of the street - Lunfardo. These photos are a conceptual series shot for circus artist, Dario Ayala in an abandoned hospital on the 14th floor in Colegiales, Buenos Aires. We had to climb a 14ft concrete wall to break-in and then set up a fail-safe system of hard points so that harnesses and ropes could bear the weight of the acrobat. We returned 3 times before we had the right light to shoot in. Everything is shot from the ledge of a railing, hand-held, with no supplementary light. Colonia de Sacramento is a sleepy tourist town on the Coast of Rio de la Plata in Uruguay. It's an hour's ferry ride from bustling Buenos Aires and a popular little nook to spend a quiet weekend sailing, sipping mate, and stolling along cobblestone streets. You can also rent motorized buggies and drive like a bat out of hell all over town and even find some sandy beaches. The town has an old fort and colonial architecture and has been designated a popular UNESCO world heritage site by the United Nations.
To me visiting Colonia is like turning back the clock 20 years and sometimes even 100. I also turn off my watch, enjoy a seaside cafe and always snap a few shots. Because it has so much history, I was inspired to shoot something with a vintage feel to it.

Fernet Branca is an artisanal beverage gone mainstream and mixed as a cocktail with coca-cola. It originated with a recipe construed up by Monks in Milan, Italy and was brought over to Buenos Aires in the 1800's. For years it was used as a digestive and past down from one generation to the next out of tradition. About 20 years ago some marketing genius decided everyone ( yes, everyone ) should be drinking fernet and turned it into the national cocktail of choice. Consumption has more than doubled in the past 10 years and you can get it at every single bar in the country.
It tastes like a mix between gasoline, the dentist, and Buckly's cough medicine but after a few months you'll be strangely hooked on it just like I was.

Working in fashion for me was all about what everyone is wearing, how much they weigh, the label on their dress, and the date on their arm while they pretend to smile like everything is fabulous even though it's not.
Sometimes, I squint my eyes and pretend that their head has been replaced by a ridiculous object and I'm able to enjoy this context a whole lot more. This series is a result of that vision.

We often see circus arts performed in a tent, a dome, hanging onto a trapeze, in a cirque du soliel venue. Instead we took those abilities and transposed them into an everyday place showcasing difficult maneuvers in a common context...except the context wasn't as common for some as it was for Dario; a risk-taker, someone who walks on the edge of his life even when he's not on a tight-rope. For this reason it only seemed appropriate to photograph him amongst the dead. We dodged security guards at 8am in Recoleta Cemetary in Buenos Aires, eventually got caught and got kicked out. But we came up with some great shots for his professional reel as a circus artist. A great collaboration.
